Athena Graduates its Third Cohort of Board Certified Women in STEM

Updated: Jan 20, 2021

Athena is pleased to announce the 17 female graduates of its third cohort of Athena’s on Boards Series. After completing this 5-month program on October 6, these STEM executives are now positioned to bring their expertise in strategic planning, commercialization, financial acumen, risk management, cybersecurity, regulatory compliance, and IPOs into the boardrooms of companies and non-profit organizations, across California and beyond.

Athena On Boards 3-Part Series prepares diverse boardroom candidates by helping to: 1) customize their board placement strategy 2) articulate their boardroom intentions and superpower and 3) activate and augment their STEM network with the critical accountability - provided by assigned mentoring groups - that ensures execution.

As Athena fuels the supply side of these diverse board candidates, the demand side for California public companies is driven by two new state laws:

  • SB 826 | Directs California-headquartered public companies to have at least two female directors on five-member boards, and at least three female directors on boards with six or more members by 2021.

  • AB 979 | Directs California-headquartered public companies to diversify their boards from “underrepresented communities” including Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, LGBTQ, etc., by December 31, 2021.

"As the voice of women in STEM, Athena offers a deep bench of executive women ready to help companies modernize their boardroom to drive performance and profitability," Athena CEO Holly Smithson said. "It is a privilege to present and market this powerful collection of industry executives primed for board placement in both companies and non-profits, alike."
