Advancing one million women leading in STEM by 2030

Mission & Vision
25 years of building leaders
Founded in 1998 by Barbara Bry in San Diego, Athena began as a local initiative to connect women in technology with mentorship and leadership development opportunities. Over 25 years, the organization has grown into a global force – now led by CEO Holly Smithson – with a mandate to advance one million women in STEM leadership by 2030.
As a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, Athena aligns its programs with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing its commitment to gender equality and quality education worldwide.
Today, Athena’s network encompasses 150,000+ members across 170+ countries – executives, emerging leaders, researchers, and allies united by a shared commitment to equitable representation in STEM.
Our programs span curated committee events, multi-week certification tracks, on-demand learning, and executive peer groups – each designed to meet women where they are in their careers and accelerate their path to leadership.
